How it was put together

  1. Normalize historical breed-name variants and link winner breeds to their competition groups.
  2. Keep show results separate from registration-based popularity. Before the 1983 group split, Herding breeds retain their historical Working classification.

What to keep in mind

  • Best in Show covers 1907–2025; groups start in 1924; popularity covers 2013–2024. These are different windows.
  • Registration rank does not measure all pet dogs or breed quality.
  • Five early winners lack judges. Winner files include publicly recorded owner names; aggregate by breed/year for charts.
