What the chart shows
Outside-box attempts account for 38 / 170 × 100 = 22.4% of the season’s shots in this definition. The 132 inside-box attempts contain all 26 goals, including three scored penalties. All 15 directly taken free kicks are already included among the 38 outside attempts; adding them again would double-count events.
The visual preserves the complete season rather than selecting a run of poor matches. Repeated exact location-and-outcome combinations share a marker: 152 marks represent 170 attempts, and 23 goal marks represent 26 goal events. Marker area carries the count. The accompanying grouped CSV retains the contributing event IDs so the marks can be traced back to the shot table.
Cristiano Ronaldo for Real Madrid, men’s LaLiga 2017/18. All 170 provider-defined shot events in 27 appearances, including four penalty attempts and all 26 goals.
How it was made
Count event-family-10 shots, free-kick-shot subtype 33 and penalty subtype 35, using goal tag 101. Penalty shoot-outs are excluded. Keep all 170 event IDs and all 26 goals, including four penalty attempts with three goals.
Normalize Wyscout coordinates to a 105 × 68 m reference pitch: lateral position is source y-percent × 0.68, and distance from the attacking goal line is 105 − source x-percent × 1.05. Classify the penalty area using a 16.5 m depth and lateral limits of 13.84–54.16 m. The complete thresholds and event checks are in the method notes.
Show the final 35 m at equal geometric scale. Every recorded shot is within 31.5 m of the goal line, so this crop loses no attempts. Group only identical coordinates with the same goal/outside-box class; add no jitter and weight marker area by the number of contributing events.
Definitions & limits
- The data cover LaLiga 2017/18 only, with no cups, European competition, national-team games or other seasons.
- Wyscout positions are rounded event locations, not precise tracking data. Borderline inside/outside classifications depend on those coordinates and the reference-pitch assumption.
- All four penalty attempts and three penalty goals remain in the map. The separate scheduled-half chart excludes penalties, so its denominators differ.
- No expected-goals model, chance-quality, defensive-pressure or alternative-action adjustment is applied. Zero goals from this set does not establish selfish intent or prove passing would have been better.
- These are observed returns in one season, not estimates of enduring finishing ability, current form or career rank. Nearby marks can overlap at their recorded positions; the numeric totals and event IDs preserve every outcome.

Meplar filtered the season/player shot events, retained penalty and free-kick attempts, converted relative coordinates to a reference pitch, checked the box flags and complete counts, grouped identical location/outcome observations, and visualized count-weighted marks without jitter. No source endorsement is implied.
This analysis uses the fixed Events version 1 release. A source retrieval date is not documented for this page. The checks reconcile supplied derivative tables and selected event audits; they do not constitute a new audit of the full raw event archive.
